    Right Place for FAITH

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 08:17 PM EST [General]

    Key Passage: Matthew 16:5-12

    Topic: Faith/Trust; Jesus

But Jesus, aware of this, said, "O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?" (Matthew 16:8-9, ESV)

Have you ever been so caught up in your immediate need that you miss the solution? You worry and worry over a problem or a crisis, and it's like your brain just can't stop long enough to really think it through and find an answer or make a decision. If you could just take a moment, a deep breath...it'll make sense.

The disciples were a little bit like that in this passage. They were in a panic over finding something to eat, and they forgot who they were with. A few days earlier, they'd seen Jesus feed a crowd of thousands with just a few fish and loaves. Now they were worried they'd starve!

No wonder Jesus called them on the carpet for their lack of faith! He could've added their short memories to the list too. And He gave them a warning--don't be fooled or taken in by what the religious leaders offer. They offered bread that looked good, but it was empty rules and a life without true faith.

The Pharisees, Knowledge BaseSadducees and other religious leaders promoted an intricate system of rules and regulations to earn favor with God and improve their "spirituality quotient." They'd forgotten to put their faith in God and trust Him for everything; instead, they preferred to do it all themselves.

You see, while the disciples were all in a flap, trying to solve their problem their way, they were in danger of trusting themselves instead of Jesus.

Jesus uses this moment to teach His disciples to forget about finding their own solutions or thinking it's all about them and what they could do. Instead, He tells them to put their faith in the right place--in Him!

What about you? Do you get so caught up in trying to sort out all your problems on your own that you forget what Jesus can do? Take a deep breath, slow down...and put your faith where it belongs!

    too much going on

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 05:14 PM PST [General]

so i know that we are supposed to go on this all the time to update things but i must be honest, it is way to hard for me right now.  there is too much going on between school, work and then jasons family.  i dont think i should really say what is going on but lets just say his grandma isnt doing too well and they have been staying at there home for about 2 weeks.  im too busy trying to help his family out with things around their house, trying to get good grades in school, and trying to make money because i dont really have any right now.  im a sever at BJs and, thanks to the ecomny (misspelled??), i am making no money because people are tipping me horrible even when i give them amazing service.  well i have to go because i dont want to be late to work. hope every one is doing well.  i hope jason and myself still have a chance to win even though i cant put as much effort in it as some other people can =(.

    DISCRIMINATION!!!

Friday, August 29, 2008, 01:08 AM GMT [Current Affairs]

Years ago, I was employed in a hotel as a porter. I eventually made it to night porter, where I had responsibility for the entire hotel over night, serving drinks, sandwiches, and checking in guests who arrived late.

In the morning I served early breakfasts, checked out guests leaving early, and in between did the night audit on the computer, including  a system back up before and after, and cleaned and set up conferences if booked.

Throughout the night I was also responsible for security, and fire safety - doing a minimum of three circuits of the hotel, checking fire doors, etc. Despite all this responsibility, and the hours, the pay was not good, and even with the training, and experience, I was never able to obtain promotion to a higher management position with better pay and hours.

Unfortunately I was not disabled, black, foreign, or of some obscure religious sect, too old or too young so I was stuck with the possibility that my lack of success was because I was not good enough to be promoted, or even that there were simply too few posts available. Nobody had any complaints about how I did my job - only compliments.

So I find myself slightly puzzled how anyone will be able to prove that Tarique Ghaffur has been discriminated against by Sir Ian Blair - much as I dislike Sir Ians style and manner! Surely the possibility must exist that only one person can be promoted to a higher position, and threre will be several candidates... competition is tough the closer you get to the top!

I only have the press reporting to go on, but it seems that the police are spending more time and money fighting each other than they are on fighting crime, terrorism, and recruiting more frontline staff!

Mr Ghaffur alleges that Deputy Assistant Commissioner Richard Bryan stated “I can’t understand what you are saying” and claimed that [he DAC Bryan] has to “calibrate” Mr Ghaffur’s reports for his staff to be able to understand them. I can quite understand what Richard Bryan has said could be true. I sometimes cannot understand my own son when he mumbles something, and have to ask him to repeat it several times. It has nothing to do with discrimination, but simple diction and clarity of speech, and Mr Bryans hearing!!

Still on previous experience, I feel we should all be ready to dip into our pockets as tax payers, ready to pay Tarique Ghaffur the huge payout which will inevitably arise, because luckily (for him) he is black. His actions will serve to alienate a large number of his fellow officers, and give ammunition to the BNP. All this despite Mr Ghaffur's assertion reported in the Telegraph:

Ugandan born Mr Ghaffur said that his life was a "success story" since coming to Britain as a refugee and ascending through the police ranks to become the most senior Asian and Muslim officer in Britain.

He thanked a succession of senior officers for their exemplary leadership - including former Commisioner, Lord Stevens - but suggested the twilight of his career had been ruined by Sir Ian.

Mr Ghaffur said his claim had nothing to do with his disappointment at not being promoted and that he found himself in "unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory" by launching the claim.

Hmm. Looks too much like a claim to boost his pension to me.

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 08:03 PM EST [General]

That's right! I just came back from the Cryme Tyme Institute of Higher Education for a Pop Quiz on "Broham" (personal friend) and "Bromance" (gay relationship). At the last part of the quiz on the WORD UP Segment for this week, you see the picture of John Morrison and The Miz as Cryme Tyme comments and answers "BROMANCE"...

Here's a quiz for you B.S. or Masteral in "Cryme Tyme"-ology out there:

ARE JOHN MORRISON AND THE MIZ REALLY GAY?

My answer: YES, THEY ARE VERY VERY GAY!

    Barack Obama's Invesco Field speech

Friday, August 29, 2008, 12:59 AM GMT [General]

Sitting outisde a Denver Broncos souvenir store here at Invesco field as Sheryl Crowe plays "Bright Sunshiney Day" to the crowd, which is still flooding in. The queues (aka lines) outside stretched for what seemed to be miles. People much have been waiting for hours. As we press swanned past we were barracked by cries of "why don't you report the issue?" and "it's you people who got us in this mess in the first place" (a comment about not pressing the Bush administration on wmd, I think, and not an accusation we'd over-hyped Obama).

Bill Burton, Obama's press secretary, has just released some long excerpts of the Illinois senator's speech. First reaction? As promised, and as urged by many Democrats, it's short on the high falutin' rhetoric and long on specifics, promising at the outset to "spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President". It also rips into McCain. In a little over two hours, we'll see how it goes down. Here are the excerpts:

From: dailyreporters-bounces@ideasthatwin.net [mailto:dailyreporters-bounces@ideasthatwin.net] On Behalf Of Bill Burton

    "The American Promise"

    Democratic National Convention

    August 28, 2008

    Denver, Colorado

    As prepared for delivery

"Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story - of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren't well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.

"It is that promise that has always set this country apart - that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.

"It is why I stand here tonight.  Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women - students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive.

"We meet at one of those defining moments - a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.

"Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less.  More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet.  More of you have cars you can't afford to drive, credit card bills you can't afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach

"These challenges are not all of government's making.  But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush.

"America, we are better than these last eight years.  We are a better country than this."

    ***

"This moment - this election - is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive.  Because next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third.  And we are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight.  On November 4th, we must stand up and say: "Eight is enough."

"Now let there be no doubt.  The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect.  And next week, we'll also hear about those occasions when he's broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.

"But the record's clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time.  Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than ninety percent of the time?  I don't know about you, but I'm not ready to take a ten percent chance on change."

    ***

"You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.

"We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put away a little extra money at the end of each month so that you can someday watch your child receive her diploma.  We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was President - when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.

"We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job - an economy that honors the dignity of work.

"The fundamentals we use to measure economic strength are whether we are living up to that fundamental promise that has made this country great - a promise that is the only reason I am standing here tonight."

    ***

"That's the promise we need to keep.  That's the change we need right now.  So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President.

"Change means a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.

"Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.

"I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.

"I will cut taxes - cut taxes - for 95% of all working families.  Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.

"And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.

"Washington has been talking about our oil addiction for the last thirty years, and John McCain has been there for twenty-six of them.  In that time, he's said no to higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars, no to investments in renewable energy, no to renewable fuels.  And today, we import triple the amount of oil as the day that Senator McCain took office.

"Now is the time to end this addiction, and to understand that drilling is a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution.  Not even close.

"As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power.  I'll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America.  I'll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars.  And I'll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy - wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can't ever be outsourced."

    ***

"We are the party of Roosevelt.  We are the party of Kennedy.  So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country.  Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.  The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans  -- Democrats and Republicans - have built, and we are to restore that legacy.

"As Commander-in-Chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm's way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home.

"I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.  I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts.  But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.  I will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease.  And I will restore our moral standing so that America is once more the last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future."
